Gold has outperformed bitcoin by nearly 40% this year

Image
The most embarrassing chart for the crypto industry this year is the price of real gold versus the price of its main digital rival. Since January 1, the yellow metal has rallied 23%, while bitcoin (BTC) has declined 12%. Gold’s outperformance on price isn’t only impressive on an absolute basis but also disproportionately impressive due to gold’s much larger size. Indeed, there’s at least $21 trillion worth of mined gold in the world versus just $1.6 trillion worth of mined BTC. Coded orange for BTC and yellow for gold, Protos has charted the divergence of the two assets as a visual checkpoint for BTC investors. That $21 trillion estimate is at the lower end of many other estimates that acknowledge the length of time for which humans have hidden and hoarded gold. Simon Hunt, for example, thinks that China alone might secretly own 40,000 tonnes of gold — 5X the amount held by the US — and that Russia owns over 11,000. Other researchers have an ar...

Crypto market wipes $300 billion over the weekend

Image
Bitcoin (BTC) was noted in the immediate aftermath of President Donald Trump’s Liberation Day tariff announcement for trading separately from most other risk assets. Specifically, unlike U.S. – and foreign – stocks, BTC held relatively steady on Friday and Saturday, promising to retain its critical support levels at approximately $82,000. A similar phenomenon was seen in the entire cryptocurrency market. Despite the overall market capitalization plunge amounting to $400 billion from $2.75 trillion at the tariffs’ announcement to $2.35 trillion at press time, the bulk of the erasure occurred in two brief crashes. First, the total valuation of digital assets dropped by about $150 billion between Thursday, April 3, and Friday, April 4. It then held steady over most of the weekend, only to accelerate on its downward trajectory on Sunday. Ultimately, the biggest collapse occurred between the afternoon of April 6 and the early hours of Monday, April 7, as cryptoc...

Crypto expert predicts ‘violent crash’ for Bitcoin; Here’s why

Image
With Bitcoin (BTC) still struggling to surpass and stay over the critical psychological price level at $60,000, some cryptocurrency experts predict another massive crash before the maiden crypto asset can continue toward making new all-time highs (ATHs). As it happens, Bitcoin has been increasing its dominance in recent weeks, signaling the possibility of a strong crash as it happened before, according to the observations shared by pseudonymous crypto market analyst Mikybull Crypto in an X post on August 12.
