Coinbase claims the token Base just launched isn't actually a token at all

Base, the Coinbase-sponsored second layer blockchain for Ethereum that prided itself on not having a proprietary token, has launched a proprietary token. After a brief rally of two hours on its surprise announcement, the newly minted BASEISFOREVERYONE memecoin crashed 88% within two minutes . Then, at 4:30pm, someone decided to pull the rug out from under buyers, and within seven minutes, its price crashed 94%. It has since rebounded to just shy of $10.4 million. Despite the token’s crash, Base didn’t delete its announcement tweet. Instead, it tried to renew enthusiasm for the disastrous launch. Founder Jesse Pollak made no apologies and carried on with his podcast tour while retweeting blame-the-victim style admonitions about “teaching a valuable lesson” to crypto speculators. Coinbase, meanwhile, has claimed that “Base did not launch a token.” A spokesperson told Cointelegraph, “This is not an official Base token, and Base did not...

Brian Armstrong Shuts Down Coinbase (Paper Bitcoin) Rumors

Image
Rumors have been circulating that Coinbase is issuing Bitcoin IOUs (or “paper Bitcoin”) to BlackRock, which ultimately was manipulating the price of crypto lower. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, as well as other industry experts, quickly put the rumors to bed on Monday, after an X user brought the rumors to light over the weekend. X crypto analyst Tyler Durden accused Coinbase of allowing BlackRock to borrow Bitcoin without providing collateral. This in turn would cause price swings in the asset, allowing BlackRock to manipulate the market and swing prices. Durden’s allegations came following a post from Tron founder Justin Sun on X. Sun described Coinbase’s new wrapped bitcoin product (cbBTC) as “trust me.” The product lacked Proof of Reserves or audits, technically meaning that the product could freeze balances at any time. “Any U.S. government subpoena could seize all your BTC,” Sun said. “There’s no better representation of central bank Bitcoin than this. It’s ...

Arkham ‘deanonymizes blockchains,’ obscures its own ARKM token sales

The slogan for Arkham Intelligence is ‘Deanonymizing the Blockchain’ — providing public access to real names associated with crypto wallets. On its social media, the company periodically doxxes blockchain wallets, naming sales and holdings by individuals like Donald Trump or companies like Tesla, NYDIG, Marathon, or ETF sponsors. Last week, however, Arkham moved millions of dollars worth of its proprietary token ARKM into a number of third-party wallets — a move that will make it difficult to trace those token s’ ownership and sale on the blockchain . On July 17, Arkham admitted that it intended to move ARKM to ‘an intermediary address.’ Later, that wallet would transfer tokens to ‘Coinbase Custody addresses.’ Coinbase Custody is ‘directly integrated’ with Coinbase’s over-the-counter (OTC) trading desk. Moreover, price and trade confirmations inside Coinbase Custody may occur before moving funds. Although funds held at Co...
